POSM recommends EQUUS rackmount computers because the computer in a sewer inspection vehicle is not just another office PC. It is the center of the inspection system, connecting POSM software with cameras, video capture hardware, distance encoders, serial devices and other inspection equipment.

In most inspection trucks and trailers, that computer stays mounted in the vehicle for years. Portability provides very little benefit in that environment, which is why POSM generally recommends a purpose-built rackmount system instead of a laptop.

We have customers replacing POSM rackmount computers that have been operating for approximately a decade—not because the computers failed, but simply because the underlying technology eventually became outdated. That kind of service life is exactly what we want from the computer running an inspection system.

Personally Configured and Tested by POSM

Every rackmount computer purchased through POSM is shipped to POSM before it goes to the customer. Our Head of Technical Support, Andrew Siedel, personally prepares each system.

Andrew installs POSM and configures the computer for the customer's inspection environment. Depending on the system, that can include the customer's POSM templates, maps and other known customizations used in their normal workflow.

The system is then tested before it leaves POSM. Instead of receiving a generic computer and beginning the setup process in the inspection truck, the customer receives a machine that has already been prepared specifically for POSM use.

Why a Rackmount Instead of a Laptop?

Laptops are designed around portability. That makes sense when the computer needs to move from place to place, but an inspection computer is generally mounted permanently in a truck or trailer.

A rackmount computer provides better serviceability and more flexibility for the specialized hardware used in sewer inspection. Devices such as HD video capture cards, serial interfaces and other connection hardware can often be installed as internal PCI/PCIe devices instead of depending on external USB adapters and laptop docking stations.

Fewer external adapters and docking components can mean fewer connection points to troubleshoot. If hardware does need attention, a desktop-style rackmount system is also much easier to open, diagnose, upgrade and repair than a laptop.

For a permanently installed inspection system, POSM believes the advantages of a rackmount computer generally outweigh the portability advantage of a laptop.

Each system includes a three-year on-site warranty through EQUUS. If a covered component fails, EQUUS can provide the replacement part and arrange for a technician to perform the repair on-site.

That is particularly valuable for an inspection vehicle. Instead of shipping an entire computer away for service, many hardware problems can be handled where the system is located. POSM is also available to help coordinate technical support when needed.
